With the public's increased interest in rail passenger service, Amtrak needed to upgrade its downtown Raleigh station. They also needed to establish a crew base in the same general vicinity, expanded parking for their customers, and provided better transfer from bus and taxi service serving the station.
By expanding the existing station facility to create larger waiting areas, restroom facilities, ticketing, and a private area for first-class ticket holders, the building was improved to provide higher quality environments. A uniquely designed ticket booth provides a flexible option for personal interaction and staff security. An adjacent warehouse was converted into a crew base housing offices, training facilities, locker rooms and showers, for Amtrak staff. Materials for the two facilities are selected and arranged for durability and easy maintenance.
