The American Sterilizer Company Inc. (AMSCO) decided to relocate its corporate division headquarters, marketing, and research laboratories from Erie, Pennsylvania to the Research Triangle area of North Carolina. The company's management team considered the building's image, both interior and exterior, to be a high priority.
The new 75,000 square foot facility was designed to coexist with an existing manufacturing plant on a large tract of land. The laboratory and divisional headquarters were individually expressed and organizationally linked by a large two-story atrium and entrance lobby. The corporation's interior and exterior image were represented by two symbolic walls. The exterior wall is constructed of granite and celebrates the corporate gateway. The interior lobby wall, designed and produced by Clearscapes and a team of additional artists, is a visual collage depicting the history of AMSCO.
