The Raleigh based general contractor, Clancy & Theys Construction Company, had grown to be one of Engineering News Records top 50 contractors in the nation with offices across North Carolina, Virginia, and Florida. Their headquarters on an industrial street in downtown Raleigh no longer met their corporate needs, both in terms of size and communication of their corporate values. Wanting to remain committed to downtown Raleigh and having undeveloped property adjacent to their 1960s-era building, they wished to do a major expansion and create a new, highly visible entry that would speak to their commitment to craft and understanding of building materials and construction methods as a high quality general contractor.
By designing their major addition as a subtle masonry building, not unlike their original headquarters, Clearscapes created an opportunity for a new entrance lobby reception area that would link the two structures. Utilizing construction materials that make up the contractor's palette: concrete, wood, steel, glass, metal, and masonry, the entrance was designed to showcase the commitment to the art of craft for which this general contractor had long been known. In so doing, it became a visual demonstration of their skills, their knowledge of materials, and construction techniques that communicates to all who walk in their front door who they are and what they do.
