The student body of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill voted for an expansion to their existing student union which was built in the 1960s to be paid out of an increase in their student activity fees. A building addition in the 1980s added some much needed space, but that, too, was outgrown and an upgrade to the dated facility was desired. The challenge was called "the most difficult design problem on the UNC campus in twenty-five years" by the University Architect.
The structures of the original building and addition would remain, a complete renovation of the original building's interior would be done, and a new three story, 42,000 square foot addition would be added to the south of the existing buildings. This addition would complete the Union complex and be connected at three levels through an interior corridor, an outdoor plaza, and two third floor bridges. The new addition creates a public face to the complex and a front door to the campus.
