SHABA SHABU

Raleigh, North Carolina

This restaurant is located inside the Beltline in a strip shopping center. The client wanted to create a unique and contemporary environment that featured two distinct dining areas, each with its own menu. The design challenge was to reflect the culture of the cuisine. Through the use of composition, color, distinctive materials, textures and lighting, each of the two areas has a unique setting and yet presents a coherent whole. Because the previous tenant in this space was also a restaurant, the existing kitchen layout and equipment were reused without major change. The interior walls, floor finish and ceiling in the existing dining area were removed and completely redesigned.

Many of the unique elements in this restaurant were designed and fabricated by Clearscapes. Those elements include the fiberglass wall panels and light canopies in the Japanese side and the fiberglass panel behind the hostess station; the concrete counters in the Japanese and drink bar areas; and the lighting fixtures above the drinkbar counter.
