The Turnage Theater revitalized a 22,960 SF early 20th century historic theater into a multi-use performing arts center.  The building actually contained two theaters, one on the second floor, originally for vaudeville and one on the main level for touring theater groups.   Following the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation in order for the building to qualify for the federal and state historic investment tax credits, the revitalization restored this building to its early 20th century splendor.

A new significant public lobby was implemented on either side of the gallery hall in former retail space to provide the gathering space that this important public structure needed. A small back of the house addition was built on public land at the rear of the stage to provide critical support facilities. A unique partnership between the Turnage Theater Foundation and the Drama Department at East Carolina University was developed to provide high quality programming and a unique opportunity for the university students.
